Hotel near the Basilica of St John Lateran in central Rome

Also known as the Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour and Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist at the Lateran, it is the mother church of the Diocese of Rome.
It stands on the Caelian Hill and is the seat of the Holy See.
Construction began during the 4th century, and the basilica was consecrated in AD 324.
The various reconstructions made necessary by earthquakes, looting and fires have resulted in a basilica featuring a variety of architectural styles.
The Baroque interiors were designed by Francesco Borromini, the classical-style façade was created by Alessandro Galilei, and the large central bronze doors come from the ancient Curia Julia, the Roman Senate building in the city’s Forum.
Numerous works of art can be admired inside. Highlights include:

  • The statues of the twelve apostles: along the central nave, enormous niches house twelve marble statues of the apostles;
  • The coffered ceiling: the gilded wooden ceiling of the central nave dates back to the 16th century;
  • The Cosmatesque-style geometric floor;
  • The Gothic-style ciborium: dating from the 14th century and positioned above the high altar, it houses relics of the heads of Saints Peter and Paul;
  • The Lateran cloister: a masterpiece of Cosmatesque art created in the 13th century, featuring paired columns finely inlaid and decorated with golden mosaics;
  • The Holy Stairs and the Sancta Sanctorum: located in the building opposite the square, they include 28 marble steps which, according to tradition, belonged to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem. At the top stands the ancient private chapel of the Popes, known as the Sancta Sanctorum;
  • The Lateran Baptistery: detached from the main body of the basilica, it is considered the prototype for all octagonal baptisteries in the Christian world;
  • The Lateran Obelisk: the tallest ancient Egyptian obelisk in the world rises in the centre of the square.
